2013 HIE Market Trends Report: Innovation, Population Health Management Tools Needed

Published on Aug 5, 2013 by Sue Dormanen
Market volatility creates challenges for those seeking an HIE solution, according to a new HIE Market Trends Report from Chilmark Research.

Health information exchanges have been unable to keep up with industry demand for population health management tools, according to a summary of the report from iHealthBeat.

While health information exchanges are effective in delivering laboratory orders and results, clinician messages, and portal access, the report finds the exchanges did not perform well or had limited functionality for:
Notifications and alerts across networks;
Records queries across networks;
Access to disparate EHR data;
Patient engagement;
Clinical quality reporting; and
Analytics.

According to Chilmark, the strongest companies offering health information exchanges are:Medicity, Orion Health and McKesson's RelayHealth, with CareEvolution having made the most progress toward population health management capabilities.

Chilmark suggested that the next generation of health information exchanges should focus on the use of:
Query-based exchange;
Cross-venue medication reconciliation;
Automated clinical quality reporting to public agencies and insurers;
Virtually managed care plans; and
Population health analytics.

The report also found that a regional, multi-organization master patient list should be implemented, considering that the creation of national patient identifiers likely "will not happen."
